Coral Reef Mapping – for Technicians and Managers

Underwater coral reef sea view landscapeTwo new self-paced modules (Coral Reef Mapping for Managers; Coral Reef Mapping for Technicians) have been developed by the Commonwealth Secretariat tailored towards Commonwealth government officials and citizens with an interest in learning about:

  • Why coral reef mapping is important and how geospatial technologies are used to help
  • Understanding the benefits and limitations of tools and techniques currently available for coral reef mapping
  • the Allen Coral Atlas, REMAP, and QGIS

Please note that the ‘Coral Reef Mapping for Technicians’ course is aimed at those who have some prior GIS knowledge. If you have not used GIS in the past, please enrol for the ‘Coral Reef Mapping for Managers’ course. The courses will take between 1 – 2 hours to complete and a certificate will be generated once you have successfully completed the courses.

To register for these courses, which are free of charge, please create a Commonwealth eLearning Platform account and follow the instructions: The Commonwealth eLearning Platform.

Once you enrol onto the course/courses that you’re interested in, a member of the Secretariat team will approve your enrolment which will generally be within 24 hours. You can then complete the courses at your leisure.

Mangrove Mapping – for Technicians and Managers

Two new self-paced modules (Mangrove Mapping for Managers; Mangrove Mapping for Technicians) have been developed by the Commonwealth Secretariat tailored towards Commonwealth government officials and citizens with an interest in learning about:

  • Why map mangroves
  • The importance of mapping for policy development
  • Functionality of GIS mapping tools
  • Strengths and weaknesses of different software options

Please note that the ‘Mangrove Mapping for Technicians’ course is aimed at those who have some prior GIS knowledge. If you have not used GIS in the past, please enrol for the ‘Mangrove Mapping for Managers’ course. Managing for Effective Compliance in Coastal Fisheries

This online course designed for Commonwealth policy makers, government officials and planners, will provide an overview on managing for effective compliance in coastal fisheries. It also aims to focus on considerations when developing a monitoring, control and surveillance system; e.g., effective regulations, policies, stakeholder engagement, and components of an effective compliance chain more generally.

Course modules include:

  3. Module 3 Legislation that works
  4. Module 4 Social Responsibility
  5. Module 5 Tools tech and Gadgets for coastal MCS&E.

Policy considerations when developing a sustainable blue economy

This online course designed for Commonwealth policy makers, government officials and planners, will offer varied insights into policy making for promoting a sustainable blue economy. It also aims to build a platform for developing a common understanding about the benefits and best practices for policy design to implement a sustainable blue economy.

Course modules include:

  1. Introduction to sustainable blue economy
  2. Ocean governance: Gaps, challenges and developments
  3. Policy framework, approaches and processes
  4. Policies, principles and initiatives for blue financing

Science – policy interaction

Takunda Chitaka of South Africa, one of ten new Blue Charter fellows, will be hosted at Massey University in New Zealand

This online training course, meant mainly for policymakers, explores how science can play a critical role in informing good decision-making.

The objective of this training is to build an understanding of how the worlds of marine science and marine policy should interact to bridge the ‘science-policy divide’.

This 2-hour training course will consist of three 20 minute sessions with interactive discussion after each session:

  • Session 1: Understanding scientists and policymakers
  • Session 2: The role of science in decision-making
  • Session 3: Communication and integration across the science/policy interface

Project proposal development

This online training course aims to help the Blue Charter network of Action Groups and collaborators develop successful collaborative project proposals that bridge science with policy.

This 12-hour course, taught over 2 days, covers project conceptualization, planning, and partnerships, ending with the creation of a concept note that can be used in discussions with potential funders. This course is designed for those Commonwealth members who have ocean-related project ideas and wish to bring them to fruition.
