New virtual trainings courses offered in 2021

A series of virtual training courses are available to Commonwealth Blue Charter Action Group members.

Please register to join these virtual courses scheduled in May and June 2021.

Policy considerations when developing a sustainable blue economy

This online course designed for Commonwealth policy makers, government officials and planners, will offer varied insights into policy making for promoting a sustainable blue economy. It also aims to build a platform for developing a common understanding about the benefits and best practices for policy design to implement a sustainable blue economy.

Course modules include:

  1. Introduction to sustainable blue economy
  2. Ocean governance: Gaps, challenges and developments
  3. Policy framework, approaches and processes
  4. Policies, principles and initiatives for blue financing

This 8-hour course (split into two 4-hour sessions) will take place twice to accommodate time zones:

  • 26 and 27 May (1300 – 1700 BST) You can see your local time here

Coral reef mapping for Technicians

This online course designed for Commonwealth policy makers and government officials, will focus on remote sensing and GIS technologies, to help you map and monitor your local and regional coral reef ecosystems. This online course is tailored to technicians with prior GIS knowledge. If you have not used GIS already, please register for our managers training instead.

During this 3-hour course, you will:

  1. Learn why coral reef mapping is important and how geospatial technologies are used to help
  2. Get hands on experience with the Allen Coral Atlas, REMAP, and QGIS
  3. Understand the benefits and limitations of tools and techniques currently available for coral reef mapping

This 3-hour course take place twice to accommodate time zones:

During this 3-hour course, you will:

  1. Learn why coral reef mapping is important and how geospatial technologies are used to help
  2. Explore case studies with other managers and technical experts, including an introduction to the Allen Coral Atlas
  3. Discuss resource requirements and how to best achieve your goals

Science – policy interaction

Takunda Chitaka of South Africa, one of ten new Blue Charter fellows, will be hosted at Massey University in New Zealand

This online training course, meant mainly for policymakers, explores how science can play a critical role in informing good decision-making.

The objective of this training is to build an understanding of how the worlds of marine science and marine policy should interact to bridge the ‘science-policy divide’.

This 2-hour training course will consist of three 20 minute sessions with interactive discussion after each session:

  • Session 1: Understanding scientists and policymakers
  • Session 2: The role of science in decision-making
  • Session 3: Communication and integration across the science/policy interface

Mangrove Mapping – for Technicians

This online course is tailored to technicians with prior GIS knowledge. If you have not used GIS already, please register for our managers training instead. During this 2-hour course, you will learn:

  • Why map mangroves?
  • Features and capabilities of GIS software
  • Using Global Mangrove Watch data
  • Accessing remote imagery data and using Google Earth Engine
  • Performing initial mapping and analyses
  • Strengths and weaknesses of software options

All participants are requested to have a Google Earth Engine account and to have downloaded QGIS prior to the training session

Stakeholder engagement strategies

The 6-hour training course, set over two days, will draw out key insights and principles from international best practice to assist you in designing stakeholder engagement for Blue Charter initiatives.

Project proposal development

Group at the Blue Charter All Champions Partner Day

This online training course aims to help the Blue Charter network of Action Groups and collaborators develop successful collaborative project proposals that bridge science with policy.

This 12-hour course, taught over 2 days, covers project conceptualization, planning, and partnerships, ending with the creation of a concept note that can be used in discussions with potential funders. This course is designed for those Commonwealth members who have ocean-related project ideas and wish to bring them to fruition.
